village of Mykhailivka

Reference information
The village of Mykhailivka (Pokrovsky district, Donetsk region) is located in close proximity to the city of Novogrodivka. The history of the village is closely connected with the development of the lands of Central Donbas and the development of the agricultural and coal sectors of the region. Historically, Mykhailivka developed as an agricultural settlement, whose residents were engaged in crop production, animal husbandry and ensuring the food needs of the industrial region. With the development of coal mining in the Novogrodivka region, some of the villagers also worked in the surrounding mines and industrial enterprises.

History

As a result of decentralization and administrative-territorial reform, the village of Mykhailivka became part of the Novogrodivka urban territorial community. The village is one of the key settlements of the community, bordering directly with the urban area of Novogrodivka and adjacent villages (in particular, Mykolaivka and Memryk).

Population

According to the 2001 All-Ukrainian Census: The village had a population of 1,269 people. This made Mykhailivka one of the largest rural settlements in the Novogrodivskyi district (and later the community). On the eve of the full-scale invasion (2021–2022): The village had an estimated population of 1,000–1,150 people. In 2024, due to the approach of the front line and constant artillery and air strikes, a mass mandatory and forced evacuation of the population was carried out.

Features

The village had a Mykhailivka secondary education institution of grades I–III (Mykhailivka School), where children from both Mykhailivka and the surrounding small villages studied. The school hosted educational, patriotic, and sports events for the community. In recent years, before the temporary occupation of the community, education was conducted remotely.

Primary medical care for residents was provided by a medical assistant and obstetrician station (FAP) / family medicine outpatient clinic in cooperation with the KNP “Center for Primary Medical and Sanitary Assistance” of the Novogrodov City Council.

The center of cultural and social life was the Mykhailivka Village House of Culture. Amateur creative groups operated here, festive concerts, exhibitions, and commemorative events aimed at preserving local Ukrainian folk traditions were held.

Modernity

In August 2024, Mykhailivka found itself at the epicenter of fierce fighting in the Pokrovsky direction. The village suffered extensive destruction as a result of constant strikes by Russian artillery, anti-aircraft missiles, and drones.

In late August and early September 2024, the village was temporarily occupied by Russian troops. Residential buildings, a school, a cultural center, and critical infrastructure facilities in the village suffered serious or complete destruction.
